What Happens At A Dental Checkup?

Routine dental visits are an important component of good oral health, but many patients overlook them. This is partially due to anxiety or uncertainty about the process itself. We understand that the unknown can be concerning, and at Crossroads Family Dentistry, we want our patients to feel as comfortable as possible. That’s why we are going to look at what you can expect at a dental checkup with our team! We have created an environment that is designed to be as stress-free as possible. We have personal touches such as a comfort menu that includes streaming tv service in your treatment room, comfortable chairs, cozy blankets or a pillow on request, chapstick, complimentary beverages, and the like.

Does a dental checkup take a long time?

One of the first questions patients want to be answered is how long they can expect their dental exam to take. While the exact amount of time depends upon your specific needs and dental health, most patients are in and out of the appointment rather quickly. We do our best to make the process as streamlined as possible.

Health History Review

The first step in our dental checkup is a patient health history review. This consists of patients updating their hygienist or dentist with major health concerns to ensure effective and safe treatment plants can be developed.

Perio Depths

Once we have your health history updated, we will gently probe along your gums to assess the condition of your bone and soft tissue.

Head, Neck, and Jaw Exam

The next step is a series of examinations. These include a head exam, a neck exam, and a jaw exam. These tests help your dental professional understand what external factors might be influencing your oral health as well as how your oral health might be impacting other areas of your body.

Dental Exam

Our team will closely examine your teeth and jaw for any potential issues. Note that a dentist or a dental hygienist might do this, and should you need any x-rays, those will be taken immediately after the exam. Patients receive x-rays at least once per year, even if they do not have any obvious dental issues.

Scaling and Polishing

Once we have taken a look at the state of your teeth and gums, we will clean both thoroughly of plaque and other bacteria. This is done via scaling and polishing, a process that removes problem debris and lightly resurfaces your teeth.

Home Care and Treatment Planning

Finally, it is time to discuss what we have found during your exam and create a treatment plan to keep your teeth in the best possible shape. We will also look at pictures of problem areas and give you some detailed home instructions about caring for your oral health.

That’s it! After a few quick steps, you will be on your way out with the peace of mind that comes with excellent dental care.
