Does A Healthy Diet = A Healthy Mouth?

Does A Healthy Diet = A Healthy Mouth?

We all know that a healthy diet is beneficial to our bodies in that it promotes weight loss, can reduce cancer risks, and will keep your heart healthy, but did you know that a healthy diet can also contribute to a healthy mouth? Certain foods that are good for your body are just as good for your mouth!

Consumables That Are Healthy for Your Entire Body

  1. Water: Since our bodies are about 60% water, it’s no wonder that adding more to our bodies is so important. It’s also one of the best beverage options for your teeth as it contains no sugar or compounds that could stain or harm your teeth. Plus, if your water is fluoridated, it will help to strengthen your teeth against decay.
  2. Apples: An apple a day keeps the dentist away too. While they can be a little hard to bite into for some initially, that crunchiness and constant need to chew is what produces saliva, the key to rinsing your mouth.
  3. Greens: Like apples, leafy greens require a bit of chewing, so they will also produce saliva. They can also help keep blood sugar at low levels, as they contain only a small amount of sugar (if any).
  4. Yogurt: Yogurt consumption is often linked to adding probiotics or “good bacteria” to your body, but its abundance of calcium will help preserve teeth enamel. Just make sure you check the label for added sugar.
  5. Cheese: Similar to yogurt, cheese contains a fair amount of calcium, but it also has casein, a protein that works to ward off decalcification. And don’t forget about Vitamin D.

Just like there are certain foods that are good for your body and mouth, there are others that are not good such as soda, crunchy snacks that can leave sharp pieces stuck in your teeth and gums, and of course, candy. And the list goes on.

There is no “wonder food” that will keep your whole mouth healthy and prevent cavities and disease. These are only foods that promote good oral health. No food will replace the benefits of a regular check-up with your dentist. Schedule your appointment today.
