Make Good Choices For Your Oral Health

Keeping yourself healthy can seem like a monumental, overwhelming task, but really it comes down to the little choices you make every day. In terms of your oral health specifically, here are some good choices you can make to keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible.

Consistently Brush and Floss

As little kids, we all learn we should brush our teeth twice a day and floss regularly, but these habits can often fall by the wayside into adulthood. Though, brushing and flossing are essential parts of a good oral health regimen!

Brushing your teeth removes plaque and bacteria from the surface of your teeth. Make sure to brush for a full two minutes so you don’t miss any spots. Flossing once a day will help get the plaque and bacteria the toothbrush doesn’t reach.

Keep in mind that the kind of toothbrush you use is important, too. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends choosing a toothbrush with soft bristles. Medium or hard bristle brushes can cause damage to the gums or erode your tooth enamel.

Substitute Sugary Drinks Out for Water

Dentists are constantly pushing their patients to reduce the amount of sugar in their diet, but did you know the number one source of added sugars in American diets is sweetened drinks?

If you’re someone who drinks soda or other sweetened beverages regularly, you may be putting yourself at a higher risk of cavities and other oral health concerns. Try substituting some of those drinks for water or unsweetened coffee or tea. Your teeth will thank you!

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Just like your yearly checkup with your physician is a good way to make sure your body is healthy, an annual or even biannual dentist appointment is one of the best ways to protect your oral health over the long term.

During these appointments, your dentist will look for any signs of cavities or other oral health concerns. By catching these potential problems early, you can prevent them from becoming painful and difficult to remedy. A regular dentist appointment also gives you the opportunity to address any oral health concerns you may have.

Consider making an appointment at Crossroads Family Dentistry for those in the Colorado Springs area. Our experienced dentists and dental professionals will help with all of your oral health needs.
